Website Development

Web development is a broad term for any activity related to developing a web site for the World Wide Web or an intranet. This can include e-commerce business development, web design, web content development, client-side/server-side scripting, and web server configuration. However, among web professionals, "web development" usually refers only to the non-design aspects of building web sites, e.g. writing markup and coding. Web development can range from developing the simplest static single page of plain text to the most complex web-based internet applications, electronic businesses, or social network services.

For larger businesses and organizations, web development teams can consist of hundreds of people (web developers). Smaller organizations may only require a single permanent or contracting webmaster, or secondary assignment to related job positions such as a graphic designer and/or Information systems technician. Web development may be a collaborative effort between departments rather than the domain of a designated department.

Php Programming Language

PHP is a programming language used to develop website applications, including e-commerce and content management systems for websites. It's an Open Source, industry standard language which, according to many independent tests, is faster than its nearest rival - Microsoft's ASP (Active Server Pages).PHP used to stand for "Personal Home Pages", but the powers-that-be decided the language had outgrown its original purpose, and needed a more obscure and intimidating name. As a result it's been re-christened "PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor". This type of acronym is known as a "recursive acronym", and was probably invented by a computer programmer who wanted to seem clever to his colleagues. We suggest you don't worry about trying to understand this acronym, because we don't either. Try starting with this widely-used description instead:

PHP is a server-side, cross-platform, HTML embedded scripting language.

That's quite a mouthful, but if we break the definition down into smaller pieces, it's slightly easier to understand.

  • server-side: This means that PHP programming language scripts execute on the web server, not within the browser on your own computer.
  • cross-platform: Cross-platform means that PHP programming language scripts can run on different operating systems, most importantly Linux and Windows, and web servers.
  • HTML scripting language: This means that PHP statements and commands are actually embedded in HTML documents.

Your browser reads HTML code, which tells it how to make up and display your web page. In a conventional website, a web page consists of a single, static HTML script which is sent to your computer by the web server. With the PHP programming language, this HTML is actually created on the fly, so that different HTML scripts are generated according to different variables. These variables can include things like which button has been pressed by the user, what information has been submitted on a web-based form or even the time of month. Based on these variables, PHP then creates HTML with information drawn out of a database.

Open Source Software

PHP and MySQL, the programs we use to develop dynamic websites and e-commerce systems, are examples of Open Source software. Not just a free alternative to branded products, Open Source software is often technically more advanced, efficient and reliable. Encouraging different programmers all over the world to read, modify and redistribute software, this teamwork approach ensures that Open Source software is very quickly adapted, improved and any errors in it fixed. Although it's been compared to a "great babbling bazaar", the approach has been rather uccessful as:

  • Open Source programs are readily available. They can be downloaded from the Internet for free or at a small charge.
  • Anybody can use the software for whatever they like, depending on the type of license. MySQL, for example, costs a small amount for commercial use, but access is far less restricted than corporate software.
  • Users are actively encouraged to make changes or improvements to the programs.
  • Users or programmers are given access to the software's source code - or its blueprint - so that they can make these changes or improvements.

The programs created in this way are often technically better than those produced by corporate software giants. In contrast to the co-operation of the bazaar, their approach has been compared to the building of a cathedral by individual architects or small teams of builders who work in isolation. In other words only a very few programmers can see the source while everybody else must blindly use what they've produced.Similar to Open Source and often used interchangeably is "free software". The emphasis here is on freedom from external control with 'free' used in the sense of 'free speech' and not 'free beer'.
